PUBTechSF meetups are interdisciplinary meetings organized since 2014 by the Brazilian scientific and technology/innovation community in the SF Bay Area, which includes many outstanding scientists, professionals and students who are pursuing their studies and/or careers in the Bay Area. The PUBTechSF meetings typically consist of: (i) 2-3 talks presented by invited speakers about topics such as science, technology, innovation, education and arts; (ii) an education/social impact pitch, and (iii) space for networking.

Our goal is to provide a space where the community of Brazilian scientists, students and professionals in Innovation and Technology, studying and/or working in the SF Bay Area, can meet and present their work, thus fostering collaboration and exchange of knowledge. This is also an opportunity to engage and inspire our community to create innovative solutions to problems related to Brazil. To this end, our meetups always include a project pitch dedicated to education and/or social impact.

By connecting these academics and professionals and giving them a space to share knowledge, we believe we can catalyze new connections in research and innovation, and most importantly inspire and mobilize social transformation, in particular through education

PUBTechSF meetings

The inaugural PUBTechSF meeting was held at the Brazilian Consulate in San Francisco in December 2014. Our 70+ attendees were enthusiastic to hear about the research and experience of the Brazilian professors Jean Paul Jacob (UC Berkeley/IBM), Lea Grinberg (UCSF) and Paulo Blikstein (Stanford) in the fields of Technology, Medicine and Education, respectively. Moreover, the pitch presentation for the project “Ciência na Escola”, in which Prof. Jair Siqueira Neto (UCSD) connects scientists with students in Brazilian public schools, resulted in great interest by the public and in initiation of partnerships for a pilot project with schools in Campinas, Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina.

Since then, every year we organize 4 meetings at Stanford, Berkeley, San Francisco and Silicon Valley. This is in great part to acknowledge the strong community of scientists, academics and professionals from Brazil and/or conducting studies about Brazilian subjects at these key regions, as well as to facilitate access to the community across the Bay Area.
